Any better luck with the full package from Intel? You should be able to get into safe mode (hit F8 a bunch of times when starting the system) to try it.
Intel's Download Center seems to be strangely broken right now, but I did find these links for v8.15.10.2656:

thanks for your help with this issue. As it turns out the Windows update was updating the gfx on the Intel board, as I would have expected because the version on the disk is outdated, using the intel update driver tools installed what appears to be the same update, same version etc., but without errors.
So bit of a mystery.
