RST - An unknown error occurred during the volume creation process.

Sometime ago my raid array broke for an unknown reason. At the time, during the process of trying to fix the problem, I removed the partition from the destination drive and I ended up breaking the volume.

- Intel RST - 10.8.0.1003 (latest)

- Gigabyte P55a-UD3 V.2 - F11 BIOS (latest)

- I have two identical drives: Seagate Barracuda 1TB 7,200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive ST310005N1A1AS-RK

Port 0 - has my Windows 7-64bit and 2 other data partitions. There is also about 50 Gig un-partitioned

100 Mb System/Reserved

195.21gb Boot/Windows

50.65 fb Data

585.84 Data

99.61 free/not partitioned.

*All partitions are not completely full

Port 1 - drive has no partitions/no data

I have the mobo configured with the SATA Control Mode" "RAID(XHD)", however both drive show up as Non-RAID Disk.

Now when I try to either create a RAID 1 volume or recovery volume using the Intel RST utility, indicating I want to save the data from the drive on port 0 (my boot drive), I immediately see this message:

An unknown error occurred during the volume creation process. Please

try creating the volume again.

My goal is to create a Raid 1 volume while not losing any data or having to re install the O/S from the boot/windows drive. What am I a missing?

Hello!

I recommend giving more space to the free/not partitioned portion of the hard drive. Sometimes the system does not allow to create a raid volume due to there is lack of space in a partition. Check this link for more information http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/imsm/sb/CS-029494.htm

Thanks for your response Fred_Intel.

Now that I look back at the original post that I realize I did a very poor job of describing the allocation and free space, so I am restating it here:

                 100 Mb   System/Reserved
            195.21 gb   Boot/Windows
              50.65 gb   Data
             585.84 gb Data
              99.61 gb free/not partitioned

This should clarify that there are 99.61 gigabytes of non-allocated space on the drive, so I think there should be enough available space. All, but the System/Reserved partition have a least 13 gb available.

Also, today a message bubble popped up when I launched RST. I was not able copy the complete message before it disappeared, but started out as:

Intel Rapid Storage Technology
A disk is available to use that could improve... (and then it said something about performance).

To me, this indicates that RST thinks it "should" be able to mirror the drive.

Well...after making several copies of my system, I used the WIN 7 Disk Management utility to shrink all 3 partitons by a at least 10 mg each and I took a step backwards. Now I no longer see the "Create" button using the same Admin account I was using previously.

I think the RST configuration must be pretty messed up and will probably just wait until I have time to perform a clean WIN7 install when I have more time.

Did you ever find a solution? I am seeing the same error when trying to create a new array.
