I need to update the BIOS on an S5000PSL server board.
I'm booting form FreeDOS via USB and running: BIOS101.BAT, Which warns me about a jumper, which I verified is correct, then extracts some stuff, then begins the BIOS update and hangs at:
Updating the system BIOS...0% Done
It says 3 min max. I left it for 1 hour. I tried 4 times, same thing.
Attached pic shows screen at hang.
Can't use the windows version as this is a Linux box. Can't use the "One-Boot Flash Update Utility" as that only supports red had and Suse and this is a Debian box.
Come on Intel!!! This shouldn't be so friggin difficult. All I want is for the $#!@#%# board to sleep, which is specifically fixed in the release notes for this firmware rev that I can't install.
I'm trying to install from the contents of S5000PSL_DOS_update_BIOS101_BMC68_FRUSDR48.zip
dmidecode reports the current version as: S5000.86B.07.00.0079.060520071732
The full dmidecode output is attached.
Please let me know if there's anything else I can provide.

Finally got BIOS upgraded using Intel boot CD and new BIOS on flash.
Other 2 methods, from windows & from DOS boot are completely non-functional.
Bruce, sorry for your troubles, however, I was able to perform an update using ROM-DOS with no issues using the package downloaded from Intel's support site http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=19672 . I just made sure that there were no memory managers loaded during boot-up of ROM-DOS, since that may cause the update to fail.
Perhaps when you need to perform a BIOS update in the future, look at ROM-DOS as an option.
Hope this helps.
Bruce,
Can you explain more about how you created an "Intel Boot Cd" as I am having the same issue as you did?

That was a long time ago. I found an image that was labelled as an "intel boot image" that had nothing to do with BIOS updates, at least in the description.
It was on the download page for that board.
I'm stuck in the exactly same situation.
I try it with the freedos and the DOS update packate and after reading this post, with the IDA CD too and now at least I got this error:
ERROR: Current bios is not compatible to be updated to this packages.
Selecting the "Update from Intel" option I got this versions available:
| COMPONENT | Release in package | Release on server |
|---|---|---|
| BIOS | 0098 | 0056 |
| BMC | 0.65 | 10.48 |
| SDR | 48 | 33 |
dmidecode:
BIOS Information
Version: S5000.86B.03.00.0056.071420061331
Release Date: 07/14/2006
BIOS REvision 3.0
Any help?
Thanks!
Try to upgrade to BIOS66; BMC55; FRUSDR39 first. Then apply FRUSDR 40a immediately. And then upgrade to latest version.
After two weeks with this exact issue, I got my s5000psl updated.
I downloaded de DOS update Package at Download Center and created my USB Boot drive key following this tutorial step by step MS-DOS Bootable Flash Drive - Create - Windows 7 Help Forums
We got our server alive with this update (vmware esxi 5.1 compatible).
Hope this helps anyone
