My Sony Vaio VPCS111FM has a button to launch the wireless display executable. Apparently, the WiDiApp.exe was installed in the directory ...\Intel Corporation\Intel Wireless Display\. After the upgrade to WiDi version 2.0, the application is installed in \Intel Corporation\Intel WiDi\. Now, the button won't work. It only launches the program if I have the WiDiApp.exe in a directory of the "old" name. Unfortunately this is an incomplete solution since launching it from that directory causes it to hang. Presumably there is a conflict with the DLL registrations or other application components. Any fixes available for this problem?
Very strange. Have you tried uninstalling, rebooting, and reinstalling the WiDi software? The latest is always at http://www.intel.com/go/wirelessdisplayupdate

We've identified the cause of this issue. We'll be fixing this in an upcoming release. Please stay tuned.

THANK YOU! Sooner is definitely better. Is there no registry key or XML or .INI file that can be edited to specify the function of the button? That seems like a better design idea. FYI, Intel has a new "WiDi Widget" executable (IntelWiDiWidget.exe) that offers more functionality than the WiDiApp alone. The Widget invokes WiDiApp automatically. I think it would be excellent to be able to choose whether the button invokes IntelWiDiWidget or WiDiApp.
@Ken You've got a private message. Thanks for downloading WiDi Widget. We're actually looking at making the button control either Widget or WiDi UI. What'd you have in mind for the Widget and the button- to start Widget or to fling a Window to the TV?

Shashi,
Thank you for continuing the thread. I hadn't thought of it, but I think your idea of having the button launch the widget and then automatically cause the widget to fling the active window to the TV as if I had pressed the widget button would be really great. Once fully open, the user could affect windows on the TV through the widget control that opened on the desktop as they do now. All the initialization steps would probably take a while (set up the UI, establish the connection, create the second display, fling the window, etc, etc.) but I think the wait would be worth eliminating the hassle of multiple user interactions. Also given the A progress bar or other animated control might be in order so the user gets some feedback.

Ken, please try downloading the latest release 2.0.41.0 at http://www.intel.com/go/wirelessdisplayupdate. This version should fix your hotkey.

Thanks for staying with this. I did download the 2.1.41.0 version and it shows as expected in the Help:About panel. After rebooting the button on my Sony still doesn't bring up the WiDiApp.exe however.
I did end up checking the HKLM\Software\...\Uninstall key and the proper directory is listed.
Any other ideas?
I also have this same problem with my Sony Laptop that I just bought from best buy. I updated the firmwire and software and my widi button doesnt work anymore. How frustrating when purchasing a brand new laptop.... when will this be fixed?
model number: VPCSC1AFM/S
All, sorry for the delays. We chased this down with Sony. It turns out this is a problem with the driver software for their hardware button. The driver is looking for Intel WiDi software in the wrong location and is designed so you can't change the location without updating that driver. Unfortunately there is no workaround that we can offer at this time. We have raised this issue with Sony and suggest you do the same through their customer support line. I am sorry there wasn't a better resolution at this time.

I just fixed it by simply renaming the ...\Intel WiDi\ to \Intel Wireless Display\. I'm so glad it's working now!! Have you tried that?
@jratico This will work in the short term, but when you do an update of the WiDi software, the installer will create a new "Intel WiDi" directory. You'll have to delete the old directory which might again break something. This is why we generally don't recommend doing this.

I understand that. Well, hopefully Intel will fix that issue for the next software update since they're already aware of it
guys, just create a symbolic link as explained here. It'll solve it in a cleaner fashion, even after upgrades.

On another note: Intel: could you please tell Sony to take your drivers, customize it for their machines and release updates soon? All the latest hardware is there in the latest line of Sony laptops (release since this year). However, they REFUSE to update their support site with the latest intel graphics and widi drivers. As a result customers like me (using VPC-SC1AFM) and others using the new SA/SB/SC line have to resort to that homebrew solution in the lin above to hack in into the intel driver to use Widi 1080p and protected output.
I and many others have mentioned this on the official sony forums page. However, their only reply is "no ETA as yet!" O fail to understand the delay. The driver is alreasdy provided by you. The homebrew solution took 2-3 weeks by amateurs. Sony could easily do it faster
I hope some pressure comes from Intel's side because at the end of the day - customers will blame Intel!
related: combining the intel widi and widget into an actual windows widget would be really useful. Once we setup widi, most of the times we dont need to tinker with the settings. Just a send to tv desktop widget would be great.
@electronicsguy Thanks for sharing. I've shown your feedback to our team that works with Sony. Love your idea about the WiDi Widget!
