Have a Dell 8400 in perfect condition with an 82801FR RAID/AHCI controller, but needing a fresh install of Windows XP on a new drive. XP SP2 install went fine, but got BSOD pointing to disk/controller on actual XP startup. Researched and found issues with 82801FR needing drivers loaded via F6 at setup start, so tried it using both Dells recommended drivers and the latest drivers on the Intel website. This time, got BSOD as soon as setup went into Windows. The old drive still works fine and has the same iastor.sys driver installed as I had on my F6 floppy (but it's too small and Windows is corrupt). Eventually gave Vista a try, and it installed and ran fine, but that's not a good solution for me.
Any ideas?
what bsod error are you getting during the instalation?
just to make sure, you are using these drivers here right:
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=N&ProductID=2101&DwnldID=15449
does you XP installation already include a service pack?

Those are the drivers (as far as I know), although I downloaded the version that creates a diskette for use with F6. And yes, the CD I'm using to attempt the reinstall is an SP2 restore CD. When I load the drivers with F6, it alerts me that a newer driver exists on the CD. I've tried both using the drivers on the floppy and using the drivers on the CD. When I load the drivers from the floppy, it BSODs almost immediately. When I load the drivers on the CD, Windows installs, but BSODs the first time XP boots following installation.
The BSOD error is 0x000000070 and says I need to back out any hard drive controller driver I recently installed. Of course I can't, since Windows won't boot. Thanks for responding!
im sure that someone at the dell forums have tried this configuration. perhaps you could check for information there.
My guess is that it could be something particular to this one system.
I have a dell PC and the dell community is quite good in answering questions.

Thanks OJ - I actually went there about the same time, but they were having server problems. Will try again.
Hi Rip_m,
I just finished re-install XP SP3 on Dell Dimension 8400 today. The SATA driver Version 4.5 on Dell support is out dated. You need to download version 5.5 for Intel website here:
32-bit Floppy Configuration Utility for Intel® Matrix Storage Manager version 5.5.0.1035
Make a floppy disc and do the F6 again. It works for me.
Don't download any newer drives. I tried them all (Version 8.8, 7.0). They don't work on Dimension 8400.

i have a sony vaio with a 82801fr controller ich6r type. they told me they no longer have for download the needed driver to install a fresh copy of windows xp using the f6 third party driver option. sony says they dont have it, intel says the same but its an intel product so does anyone have a link to a free download of the correct driver for the floppy drive? please any help.
This is the latest, and very likely final, download from Intel for making the diskette used with F6 on the WinXP install with the 82801FR ICH6R I/O chipset controller.
