Full Contest Details

Video must be no longer than 3 minutes in length.

The video must be good enough quality must allow viewers to hear & see the information clearly.

The video needs to include a description of your challenge, the environment in which the problem exists and how big of a challenge it is (in terms of scope & size). If the video is about a Intel vPro™ technology use case please, reference the specific use case and explain in detail the environment in which the change will take place,. Please be as descriptive as possible.

The video is a pretty big description of one of our biggest challenges, remote offices during off hours.

Names, faces, and bad software have all been changed to protect the guilty. Yes, this has bad stand-ins. Yes, it's a rough cut. But really, we hope that you will find it entertaining and will provide at least ONE laugh.

Here it is:

I thought you should know that the reason we did the video this way was that one of the people involved in this was, until very recently, with a large company with such issues. He is no longer with them and signed an NDA on the way out. Just so you know it is a bit of a privacy issue.

In the spirit of the game. If anyone out there is thinking of doing a video but doesn't have the time/ability to edit it, send it to me. I'll do it for you and it's free and YOUR entry. DV tapes or a digital file can be sent. I promise to spend more than the few hours I spent editing my stuff. I'll also return the files/tapes when I'm done.

Maybe you have a better camera person too!

Similar to the previous video post - a key challenge is remotely diagnosing or repairing a system. The following video shows how to use IDE-Redirection functionality in an Altiris environment. Two scenarios are shown - overriding the local boot order and connecting to remote bootable device. More information in the text description of the video.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KkJlp7pCACs

Although the target boot image is a default Microsoft Windows XP installation - the general idea is sufficient to alleviate some common challenges I've experienced in various environments:

  • Need to diagnose a remote system due to operating system load failures, or the remote console agent is unavailable. Remote might be a floor away, one building away, one state away, or more.
  • Need to reimage a single or small group of remote system. Wake-on-LAN and PXE-boot are not supported in the infrastructure. Does that mean the user has to deliver their system to a PC technician? In some cases - that might require a few hours if technician is onsite.
  • What if a backup image of the target client system is needed? If preferred operating system or agent based backup options are not available - the harddrive could be extracted, sent to a PC technician who utilizes an imaging utility to capture what is on the drive. Why not use a boot ISO with the image utility and network drives to capture the drive image without moving or dis-assembling the PC?
There are likely other ideas or scenarios where IDE-Redirection can come in handy - thus saving some sneaker-net trots, improving use up-time, and allowing the support operations teams to focus on more interesting challenges. With that - a quick notedisclaimer on IDE-Redirection. It's a powerful and handy tool, yet if you're looking to simultaneously boot and reimage a large number of systems - a deployment server solution using multicast might be a better option. IDE-Redirection is unicast based and the number of connections will be less that a deployment server solution might offer. There are additional considerations - take a look at http://juice.altiris.com/article/1904/with-intel-reg-amt-power-management-and-redirection IDE-Redirection is just one functionality. Combine with remote (and reliable) power functions, agent presence, system defense, and other features - and the supporting client management suitesolution - and you've got additional reachcapability. Maybe there's a chance of working a normal set of hours... Here's some real-world scenarios where I could've really benefitted from Intel vPro (I say "could have" - since my jobcareer changed since experiencing these situations)
  • Remote Kiosk station requiring reimaging. Kiosk systems are often distributed farwide across various locations. Or - in the case of airline self check-in counters - several are grouped together yet interestingly all may not be available. Using Intel vPro - the flexibility exists to boot, reimage, troubleshoot, etc - whether from a local optical drive with bootable image or remotely.
  • Distant office or location with no local IT technician. Similar to above - the ability to reimage, diagnose, etc - remotely. The image could be sent across the network (some considerations here - see below) or from a local image. As one CIO in the Petrochemical industry mentioned - "we operate in areas of the world you don't want to vacation in".
  • Combining with System Defense and Agent Presence features - the scenario becomes even richer. What if the target client (or group clients) has been infected by a virus or are outside of mandatory compliance? Today - once the target clients were identified (may take a few hours), network isolation emediation will require a network technician (add another hour), the client support technician will have to assess and fix the situation (clock is still ticking), and then the client system needs to be added back to the network (call the network technician back from his coffee break). Meanwhile - the user has effectively signed off or may have to use a temporary system - either way, productivity has been effected and tensions are likely rising on multiple sides. One example how this is done - http://juice.altiris.com/article/2960/utilizing-intel-vpro-amt-technology-task-server-part-7-using-system-defense-software-de

I don't have a video but a complaint. I bought the new DX38BT board. I alos bought the E6850 processor with 2g DDR3 1066. I could not get it to boot. I wasted two days. I called Intel and they sent me a new one. I set the raid drives and this one would not boot. Each time I took out the MOBO and put my old one back in and it boots the first try. I am lost and feel discouraged with this. It sould have been an easy thing but turned into nightmare. Intel will now think it is my fault. HELP please.
