Social Networking is catching steam in India and more and more people are joining a community of their choice to remain connected. In the Comscore report the popular social networking sites used by Indian users are : Orkut , Facebook , Bharatstudent ,hi5 , ibibo, Myspace, Linkedin and Bigadda. The Social networking has now taken a next step to be a valuable business tool also. Beyond the casual friendship conencts , these tools offer all of us a great oportunity to utilize the resources to make our community , business and ideas visible to a wider world.

Every knows about social networking but not everybody knows the benefits or uses it to it’s full advantage. Of course the main reasons people network are to talk to others, build relationships and find people who are similar to themselves. The more you dig down though the more uses and benefits you can find for social networking and with all the different social network and platforms, you’re spoiled for places to go.

1.Building Meaningful Relationships

Social networking and the human side of it is so important, the more real and transparent you are the better. Therefore you’ll have the trust of people and when barriers are broken down and people actually trust you that’s when your relationships will really grow. When you reach this point and it’s the point you want to strive for, when you trust each other and when you just want to HELP and BENEFIT each other, that’s when the magic happens. For example, on twitter I get a lot of direct messages but the people who send them don’t introduce themselves, say my name or personalize it in any way. I understand the time savings of having automated messages and people don’t always have the time but in the long run it’s better to sent a message by hand. Those who do personalize and actually interact with me are the people I trust, the people I remember and the people I want to help more because they put the effort and time into building a relationship with me.

If you always keep in mind that you really are trying to build valuable and meaningful relationships and not seeing them as another visitor, customer or sale, then everything else you do will bring you nothing but opportunities,  responsive followers and lifelong friends.

Priortizing the important channels for communication then becomes an essential need of the way we do Social netwrking.

2.Building Traffic

Basically the more networking you do the greater chance you have of getting traffic. This doesn’t mean the more you bombard and spam people, the more traffic you will get. It means the more real and valuable you’re networking efforts are, the more traffic you will get. Building traffic from certain social networks can be very targeted and very beneficial. For example, if you’re looking for traffic from professionals online then go to linkedin, if you’re looking to target blog owners then go to blog social networks and comment on other blogs. Each social network has their own audience and user demographics so you’re approach to each should be slightly tailored to each one.

3.Building links

Link building is the life blood of SEO. The more links and quality links you get the better and if you can get those links with your choice of anchor text then you’ll rank higher in the search engines. Most of your social profiles will allow you to link to your blog or/and your other social profiles. This is a key to successful blogging, you must build as many links as possible.

4.Increased Visibility

The more social profiles you create, the more content you create on them and the more you interact, as at result you will increase the visibility you, your site and your brand will get and also gaining you trust in the minds of others. Remember don’t spread yourself all over the web if you can’t contribute, interact and give time to each of those networks and communities. People want to be in a community, they want to talk and interact with you but if your not there to care or share then that’s a problem and may be bad for you and your site. Still, the basic point is the more you’re seen, the more familiarity and trust you’ll gain.

5.Business and JV Opportunities

Over time and the more people you meet, the more business opportunities you will come across. You’ll meet other leaders and players in your industry and niche so over time these relationships will grow, ye will understand and know what the other is doing and an opportunity will arise when one person takes the first step and proposes something. I would recommend taking action yourself and not hoping or relying on others to propose something first.

6.Mind-sharing and Insight

The idea here is that you can engage with your target audience and find out new insights. You get a unique perspective into them, their lives and their problems. You can give them help and advice and in return they give you feedback and trust, this also applies to joint venture partners where ye both help each other, so in other words mind-share with each other. This is so powerful to be able to talk to your prospects and audience and hear from them what their point of view is. Social networking is also a great atmosphere to get feedback, research and insight because it’s so human focused. People don’t want to be told, forced, spammed or made do anything but when you Involve them that’s when everything changes.

So there you have it, 6 benefits. The benefits are huge and the results you’ll receive can be huge too.

Can we seek some great ideas or examples where you have seen Social Networking is actively involved. Share your best experiences , your hosted communities with the group ?

One of such efforts I saw recently was the site by Mumbai Police encouraging youth toe be connected with police and actively partcipate in the law and order issues for the city.

For folks interested in dancing , there is an active facebook group which discusses dancing community  in  Mumbai

So , social networking provides a good worth of your time is used effectively . Ensure that every minute you spent on the Social networing site adds a positive experience to your life.  Cheers and stay connected.

Gaming, I believe is the stickiest, most engaging and most interactive form of entertainment in the world today. India today is well poised to be one of the biggest gaming markets in the world. I believe that in the next 3-5 years Gaming will become a mass form of entertainment, similar to what is happening in China and Korea. Also India is at a broadband inflection point and online gaming in India will explode in the next few years.

Presently most hardcore gaming happens from gaming cafes, which are also community hang-outs for the gamers. Popular games are counterstrike, World of Warcraft, FIFA etc. The Indian gamer playing in these games is no less than any other gamer in the world in terms understanding, skill sets and the money that they spend. Casual games in India are mainly consumed from Home and Offices. In the casual games space popular genres are cricket, action and racing. I also believe that in the next few years the biggest growth will come through MMORPGs (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games), where gamers live in a virtual world and there games have over 100,000 people playing the games concurrently. Therefore with proliferation of more and more Content in the Indian market and the growing Broadband penetration, the future of the Indian gaming market is very bright and it is exciting times for the gamers and aspiring gamers in the country.

So everyone……Get Gaming!!!!

Casual Gaming in India

Posted by Sachin Kelkar Sep 8, 2009

Casual Gaming is a category of gaming which is very popular in India. Appealing themes, little learning curve, and easy controls have attracted the wide audience from world over to this fascinating concept of Casual games. The Indian gaming developers have thrived on this concept as they can use low cost of production, quick turnaround time and access to portals which host these games.

In this article we will share the concept of casual gaming, why it is so popular across the world, share some of the Indian gaming companies which bring out very “DESI” games to us.

There are several characteristics that most casual games share;

  • Low barrier to entry – easy to learn game play.
  • Simple controls. For example, most hit PC casual games feature a simple point and leftmouseclick control scheme.
  • Gameplay that is addictive, but still able to be consumed in short increments. In fact, most casual games are played in 520 minute increments either during lunch or after dinner.
  • Forgiving, nonpunishing game play. For example, most hidden object games allow you to make several false clicks before any penalty occurs.
  • Carefullycrafted ramp in game play complexity. For example, you are guided through the first level and then graduallyintroduced to more depth in the game play.
  • Casual Games tend to speak to a player’s desire for fun and relaxation, rather than the desire for adrenaline or sensual stimulation typically served by hardcore games.
  • Casual Games typically require a lower production budget than traditional hardcore games, although this gap is narrowing.

However, it can’t be stated enough that most of the characteristics. Casual Games typically require a lower production budget than traditional hardcore games, although this gap is narrowing.

Though there is no definite research on how many casual gamers are in India, the popularity of the online gaming portal like show that there is a growing population of casual gamers in India. Some of the very popular gaming portals in India are zapak.com , games2win , India games and Gamez India . This is in addition of Microsoft, Yahoo and other International players. Readers are welcome to add more names to this list.

While playing the games on these sites in an official capacity (wow, I love this job), my moto was to feature out some the real “DESI” games.  Some of these games were integral part of childhood and some of them are now lost amongst the numerous options we have today for young adults – XBOX360, Play station family of consoles and PC based gaming.

However these casual gaming sites give a new identity to the classic “DESI “games and add a very Indian flavor to the gaming. Who would not love to play the likes ofGalli Cricket” or “Kancha” online? You can also add your own insults (Galis) and make the other player go bonkers. Try out the famous “Teen Patti“ and the thrill to drive an autorickshaw in the rickshaw rampage. Desi games are gone now bolder with wacky and slightly adult themes. Check out Games2win‘s Boys Channel. The games are on this channel are naughty, based on adult themes. Try out the Great Indian Honeymoon game.

Given the popularity of Cricket there are at least 20 games catering the cricket enthusiast right from the IPL T2) to World cup T20 and India Pak series, you can pick up the flavor of your cricket. Personally I love the Mumbai flavor of Galli Cricket which is played on the streets and bi lanes and often end up in fist fights (Check the game and you will know it). There is another version of Galli Cricket which has a dedicated site to it and claims to be the official site of Galli Cricket.

Gaming sites such as Indiagames and Zapak provide a quite a collection of games for all ages and also encourage the games to create communities and collaborate online.

Worldwide there are many casual gaming sites which attract gamers. Few of the popular casual gaming portals are miniclip, popcap , Yahoo Games , MSN games , Real arcade , shockwave games. It is believed that the casual gaming business is touching USD 2 Billion and I am sure we all be a part of it some way or other – either playing the games or making money making them. Cheers and Happy “CASUAL” gaming

If you ask a computer security consultant whether you should worry about computer viruses, chances are that you will get a non committal answer like "well, that all depends"… and rightly so. There are, after all, many parameters that must be analyzed before assessing a person’s virus vulnerability. In fact, it is like asking whether one should walk around being worried about germs!

Here are a few things to consider. Computer viruses can be transmitted through emails, programs, websites, pen drives, CDs, floppies (if anyone still uses them!) USB devices, across networks... the list goes on.  They can infect your PC with or without your knowledge. Some of them are capable of paralyzing your PC or even completely destroying your data.  Unchecked, they are can exist indefinitely as long as they have a host. And if that doesn't make you flinch, consider the fact that over a million viruses are said to have been created! http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/7340315.stm

However, that's only one side of the coin. It is worth noting that many viruses are relatively innocuous and have a limited impact on the PCs they affect. Most viruses are designed to attack specific file types and they rarely infect all the files on your PC. Furthermore, for every virus that is created, the anti-virus software antidote is created within days, if not hours. Most anti-virus companies provide regularly updated virus definitions for bonafide users of their software thereby giving them protection from known viruses.

Toss into the equation the fact that only a small fraction of emails actually carry viruses.  Falling storage costs permit more frequent data back-ups which, in turn, mean that recovery from virus attacks can be quick and complete, as long as one is diligent in taking those back ups. Looking at the flip side, again, one must note that we live in a world where being ‘connected’ is the norm and interoperability across gadgets is the way forward.  The ever-growing number of devices that viruses can potentially affect means that the risk of encountering one will increase with time.

In my view, here's the bottom line. Viruses can, indeed, pose significant threats to your PC and data. If you are unlucky and are struck by a truly malicious virus then all the statistics in the world supporting the notion that most viruses are more irritating than devastating will be meaningless.  However, that need not be the case. If you are cognizant of the risks and are careful… then you can look forward to stress free computing experience. The idea should be to take proactive steps to protect your PC against viruses, to have solid recovery plans in place and to exert uncompromising caution at all times. If you do that, the threat of a virus infecting your PC will not keep you up at night.

Imagine standing in front of your TV and interacting with its content just with your gestures, imagine participating live in a quiz show through your television with your voice and video inputs. Imagine surfing in the open sea but not getting wet. Sounds like the future? Well it’s not.

This time at E3, Microsoft took the center stage with the announcement of its new "controller-free” gaming and entertainment experience code named “Project Natal”. Project Natal enables users to control and interact with the Xbox 360 without the need to touch a game controller through a natural user interface using gestures, spoken commands or presented objects and images. This brought attention to a silent revolution that has been taking place in user interfaces and specifically gaming interfaces in consoles, PC’s and arcade machines.

This momentum was kicked off with the tic-tac-toe game on computers way back in 1952, followed by a series of popular arcade games such as Space Invaders, Battlezone and Pac-man which were followed with equally popular PC versions. These brought in controllers such as a track ball and joystick. Consoles were introduced by players such as Magnavox, Nintendo and Atari in the 1970’s which introduced the concept of a remote controlled game pad.

These got further improved with the launch of the Playstation and Xbox platform and Gaming PC’s, turning from wired to wireless, incorporating force feedback and motion control. These controllers also evolved into specialized form factors such as steering wheels, pedals and other game genre specific modifications. All these controllers made their appearance on both PC’s and Consoles.

2005 brought in a brand new gaming innovation on Play station. The game was known as Guitar Hero, it allowed a player to strum a real guitar and a likeness on screen would do exactly the same. This brought in a change in thinking amongst game developers; why not use the whole human body as a game controller? Innovations such as the dance pad followed.

Then in 2006 Nintendo announced the launch of its 6th generation console “The Wii”, on the face it looked like just another console release, the graphics were nothing to write home about and the games available on the platform were limited. The product was a runaway hit shipping around 50 million units to date.

What was the differentiator? It was the Wii Remote. Nintendo used motion control to help create almost a real life user experience especially on sports games, keeping the game play simple and uncomplicated. This caught the imagination of the larger user base which was shying away from video games due to their complexity.

Today motion control technology is at the cutting edge of all user interface designs be it phones such as the iPhone or gaming controllers or specialized interfaces for the physically challenged. For example computers which can be controlled through eye or limb movements, keystroke selections which can be made by blowing with your mouth. User Interfaces are also be developed which can even be controlled through brain pulses.

This blog kicks off a series where I will be writing about one such technology innovation which proved to be a game changer for that industry. I would like to elicit your comments and inputs to make this more comprehensive
