The University of Plymouth understands the power of IT to support learning and attracts an increasing number of students with its mixture of high quality teaching backed by leading-edge computer technology

Sustainable development is a high priority at Plymouth. The university looks for solutions that help people work more efficiently while also protecting the environment. Under an existing system, IT personnel needed to update the university’s computers regularly with new software and security patches, which meant computers were left running overnight to receive essential updates, with up to 5,000 machines operating 24 hours a day, five days a week. This meant that finding a more efficient approach to desktop management became a priority in order to help reduce their carbon footprint

The Solution was to use a combination of Intel® vPro™ technology and energy-efficient Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processors, desktops will use 40 per cent less power  Security updates can also be managed whether the computer is left on or off Improved asset management is therefore feasible
