Windows 7 + PCI Simple Communications Controller +Compaq 6910P

Given that the Windows 7 compatibility check said my Compaq 6910p laptop had not problems, I installed Windows 7 Ultimate. All installed O.K. although I did have to get many drivers from Compaq's web site.

But one issue defies a solution. I apparently require drivers for the PCI Simple Communications Controller. HP/Compaq support pointed me to their Vista drivers but only after I pushed them - well, Microsoft claim that Vista drivers should work on W7. But these refuse to install climing incompatibility with the operating system.

Intel's own automatic system check isn't any help either. And back to Microsoft who say it's Intel's problem.

Have got off to a good start with two desktop system on which I installed W7, but I'm now becoming decidely disillusioned, especially since this laptop is newer than the two desk tops.

Moreover, I'm off to Zimbabwe in a couple of weeks where I'm expected to show Windows 7, and since this PCI problem appears to be at the root of my failure to get wireless connectivity, I'm not a happy camper.

Has anyone any thoughts here?

Windows 7 - 64 bit - Simple PCI Communication Controller Issue

On a HP Compag DC 7700 with Intel Chipset and under Windows 7 - 64 bit, a device appears on device manager with description "Simple PCI Communication Controller" with the yellow question mark. Assuming (correctly I think) that it is the Intel ME Management engine, I downloaded from the Intel Download Center the latest drivers (MEI_AMT_ALLOS_5.2.10.1023_PV) which, I should point out, claim to be compatible with Windows 7 x64.

After running the installer, it gives an error that my system is not compatible.

Proceeding as specified in the answers to the similar question by George Bell, I located the extracted files, and tried to run the exe from the x64 folder but in vain. It doesn't do anything, not even shows any message.

I also tried to tell windows to search in the extracted folder for drivers for the aforementioned device but again nothing.

I would very much appreciate your help, as this is getting frustrating.

PS. Please forgive me for the double posting (already posted a reply to the similar question by George Bell that was already answered), I just thought that it is more appropriate to start a new Question, especially since that one was marked as answered.

I have been using the Beta version of Windows 7 since November last year, I am now on the RC1 build both at home and in work, it’s a great OS very fast compared to Vista, I have found the new jump lists invaluable at finding previously opened documents straight from the task bar.

The look and feel of this new offering from Microsoft is great everything seems a lot crisper in some way. I have it running on a core i7 at home with 12 Gb memory and the cpu O.C to 4.03Ghz and I must say Windows 7 is very fast, on my work laptop I am running a Centrino Duo with 2Gb memory and Windows 7 is still very fast, I have had no issues while trialling the OS for Intel and I am pleased Intel will be rolling this out across the business I am sure people will be more than happy with the transition.

For those people who would like to see what the fuss is all about you can still download the RC version from the Microsoft website which will run until June 2010, Various online retailers have already started pre orders from as little as £44.95 which is a bargain.

I am pleased to say even office 2007 performs better under Windows 7, are you using Windows 7? Personally having experience as an IT manager I found the game quite realistic providing typical issues and situations that would arise on a day to day basis.

It took me a while to learn that I could train my team so they were up to speed on the latest technologies, this helped provide support within my offices. One thing I would love to see is the possibility to go and purchase new hardware better machines / servers etc.

Mike
