I have not tried my NEC and Via USB cards on the new board yet. Since everything is running well, I have put that off for now.

The device manager shows no yellow flags (see attached). However, of the original 6 USB ports on the rear of the mobo, 4 have power, but none seem to work. I have tried a desk lamp, mouse, keyboard, and pen drive in each slot.

I do have a lot of problems with electricity here - during storms and even without foul weather. All computers are plugged into APC UPS units. I would hope that would eliminate any spike issues.

Moschip card is working fine so far.

Waiting is part of the Brasilian culture that takes some getting used to. Not so different than the USA lifestyle of the 50s. We were at a small, one man upholstery shop. He needed a break! A related story..... One day I was waitng for my barber. I had been using him for about 2 years. It was noon, the door was open but no one was inside. I looked around and saw my barber across the street eating lunch - he saw me as well. I decided to wait for him - a guy has to eat - I grabbed the newspaper to pass the time. After about 15 minutes, I looked up and saw him shooting pool. I left - I have a new barber now - I´m pretty easy but not able to adapt to just anything!

I don´t know anything about SSDs. Since they are relatively new, I thought it might take some time for them to become `perfect´. Good to know they are already there. So what do you mean about the real world speed? I want one for my Windows 7 OS so the machine will boot rapidly. I am not a gamer. I did assume that all applications should be loaded on that drive as well. My current C drive has about 38 gig on it so I assumed 64 gig SSD would be plenty. Of course I do not know what `except for the standard SSD OS tweaks, since the current PC file systems were not designed with SSDs in mind´ means either. Any thoughts / input would be appreciated.

Interesting comments. Not sure where we are going with this discussion, but you guys have helped me a lot, so I will provide additional detail - another log on the fire.

First regarding my mice. Their model name is Microsoft Comfort Optical Mouse 3000. They are sold with Intellipoint 7.0 Mouse software. Is a new driver installed when you install this software? I do not know. Initially I used this software. Whe I reloaded Windows from scratch, I did not reinstall this Mouse software.

Ok , more detail on what happened yesterday. I wandered into a computer repair shop without my computer. I was killing time, waiting for someone in the business next door to return from coffee. They were willing to listen, so I told the about my mobo problems. They called out some kid from the back and I told my story again. He said he had a customer with the same problem - none of the rear USB ports worked. He asked me if I tried an add-on card with USB ports. I told him I tried both NEC and Via chipset cards - and that neither worked. He siad I should try a MOSCHIP card because it worked for him. So then I told him my mobo was lost in the mail. If it ever resurfaced, I would try that. He asked me to wait, he went to the back and returned with the exact same model mobo with a Moschip USB card in a PCI-E slot. He said the customer did not want it - asked for a new board and he sold him one. He offered this board to me for about the price of the USB card. I took it home, installed it, and proceeded to reload from scratch again. Everything appears to work fine so far. I am still reinstalling apps.

The post office will not buy me a new board - just a figure of speech - I sent it insured so they will pay me if it does not show up `soon´.

Thanks again for all your help guys, I really appreciate it. Before the year is out, I will be building a new computer with all new parts except the disk. Probably use an i5 (depending on price) and a 120gb SSD (hopefully they are rock solid by then).

Now I am convinced that this mobo was cursed. It never arrived at Intel for replacement. The post office shows it leaving Rio but then nothing.

That´s the bad news. The good news is that the post office will buy me a new one - someday. The better news is that I got a used replacement board today from a local repair shop. It is the exact same board with the same USB problems. But the repair tech put a USB card in it that works. A PCI-E card with a MOSCHIP Chipset (whatever that is). And the mobo and USB card work - I am using the computer now. Time will tell if it has other problems. I need to get the rest of my apps loaded and see how it goes.

I still don´t have the part for the CoolerMaster Hyper 212 Plus so I still have heat issues. With Speedfan, I had the CPU fan running up to 1800 rpms, now I can barely get 1300 - I assume is near failure. I should get it this week - another we´ll see!

Oi parsec,

I save packing materials for a few days but then pitch them. I don´t even remember the part. But I made one - we´ll see.

I read some more in these Intel forums about my fan/heat issue. Others write that the DG45ID does nothing to the fan speed until the temperature reaches 75 - then it speeds up. So from that, I assume my board is running to specs. Yet everything else I´ve read suggests 50 is an ideal temperature.

The new fan did come with a injector type tube of thermal compound. It is unmarked so I am not sure of the brand or quality. But I have some of the good stuff I bought when I installed the board that I´ll use.

We packed away one of the blankets yesterday since the low was only projected to reach 66 - felt warm enough with one blanket! We only have about 5 two blanket nights each winter - this first one came early. Sounds like the weather is strange all over the world with your temps jumping up and down as well. I susbscribe to another forum that has members worldwide - it´s kind of fun to get the strange weather updates, whether they be hot, cold, windy, rainy or whatever.

Hi parsec,

certainly don´t have a plastic cover for the cpu socket - thanks for the heads up - maybe I will fashion one and tape it in place.

My cpu is the Q9300. My CPU fan (stock junk) runs at 306RPMs and the cpu temp around 69 under idle conditions. The fan never goes faster. That´s why I bought the CM 212+ which was delivered with a missing back plate - thus not installed. But some good news.... I stumbled upon software named SpeedFan and now the CPU fan is steady at 1400 and the CPU temp is 52. That is my temporary solution. Any experience with this software? Not sure I can trust it long term.

I´m sure you´ll have way more 90 degree days than you want (except when it is over 100). We suddenly got Chicago winter weather here (relatively speaking). Only 75 for a high temp and down to 62 last night - broke out the extra blankets.

trying to catch up.......

yes, the USB issue is significant in that I have mouse and keyboard wires coming out the front of my computer and I can´t hook up a printer to this machine without another USB port. Also 2 of the memory slots don´t work and the machine will not come out of sleep mode. Also I have a heat problem. A friend just brought a new Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus CPU cooler and, would you believe, the back plate is missing. Now they have mailed me a new one but I must wait maybe another month.

Intel has offered a warranty replacement, both here and in the US but that means I will have no computer for the time it takes to process the replacement - maybe a month. It is not the end of the world - I do have another computer although a very lame one. I fear it could die at any moment.

Quite frankly, I don´t have much faith in the CPU - maybe it is the problem (or a problem). If not now, considering the heat issues, how long will it last?

If Iwere still in the states, and still working, I would just buy a bunch of parts at a computer show and build a new one. I would never deal with all this. But that was then and this is now!

I never bought the Silverstone addon because i don´t know if it would connect to teh motheroard. Remember the board has none pin connectors and he Silverstone propaganda stated it had two 5 pin connectors - I do not understand how to plug them into the board. Tha twas my orignial DG45ID question on this forum that never got answered. I already have two 5 pin connectors NOT plugged in. The PCI card doesn´t work nor did a replacement board they gave me.

I´m only half a hardware geek because I don´t know much beyond the basics. I can replace parts, even build a system from parts, but when something goes wrong, I come running here. When I was working, I just took the machine to the office - there was always help there! I don´t mind the effort to reload Windows and all my drivers and applications - when things turn out well.

Well, Monday I will be shipping the mobo to Intel in São Paulo. Any bets on a return date. This is not the USA so 2 weeks would shock me - I´m guessing a week to get to them, they send the new one about the 3 week mark, and I see it at the 30 day mark. And trust me, having lived here 5 years, this is an optimistic projection. CoolerMaster, on the other hand, deliverred the new part to my USA address in 4 days.

We can buy all except the latest / greatest computer parts here easily but at prices at least double and often triple. The parts are all imported and heavily taxed. I usually buy from ebay, Amazon, or Newegg in the states and rely on friends to bring them down in their checked baggage. The computer I have now was brought here intact by a friend and it is a pretty big tower machine.

OK guys, thanks for all your help! I think, given all of your opinions, that I will try the fresh Windows install prior to returning the mobo. Incidently, I did speak to Intel in the USA and Brasil, and both are willing to give me a new board. That´s nice except both want to touch the old board before they will ship a new one to me. I hoped they would ship a new one, and then I would return the old one. Isn´t that they way it goes in the USA? Seems I replaced 2 disk drives that way - they had my credit card info and I had 15 days to return the old one or be charged.

I have an extra disk in this machine so I can copy things to it or to an external drive - no problem. But other than data and my application install files, what can I copy that would help after the new Windows install? How do I copy ``all drivers´´ or would I want to? Are they in easy to find directories? I see a product named My Drivers exists but cannot verify it works on Windows 7 - I am using Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit.

I will also need to decide whether to load SP1 for Windows 7. I have not installed it todate although all other Windows updates are applied àutomatically´. If I do a fresh install from my DVD, it will take countless hours to get it back to where it is today with all the Windows updates. I could get a Windows 7 DVD that is more up to date including SP1. Any of you have experience, good or bad, with SP1? thanks a bunch!

Curious592 - thanks.... I agree, I bought 6 of these Microsoft 3000 mice just for that reason. I tried 3 of them with the same results. I did resolve the

intermittent mouse prolems though. The 3000 comes with some software - I reloaded the software, set it to `factory defaults´, and all is well.

Flying_Kiwi - thanks again... the voltages seem to hold steady but I probably wouldn´t see it if there was a spike. Introducing a pen drive, mouse, or keyboard does not cause the readings to change. My rust blocker strip do not touch anything - they attach to the inside fo the case - I have them positioned on the wall opposite the motherboard.

Reinstalling Windows from scratch??? `From scratch´ implies losing all data, etc. Might as well change out the motherboard if I am going to do that. Or did you mean reload as in repair mode? Or another method I am not thinking of?

parsec - thanks again.... interesting as your recommendation leads me full circle to the original DG45ID question I posted here. I like the Silverstone unit since it has 4 USB posts. However it requires a 4 inch bay in the front but I can live with that - I will remove my HP Pocket Media Drive Bay. Of course, i don´t want these 4 ports in the front - much prefer the rear - but I can live with that as well. However this unit comes with 4 separate USB cables ending in standard 1x4-pin plug, plus 1 pin for shield. The motherboad connection has but 9 pins - seems I need 10. And can I plug two 4 or 5 pin USB plugs into one 9 pin connection????

For all - an update - the yellow explanation points come and go on their own. But I can also make them go away by disabling, then enabling the controller with this yellow explanation mark. When they are gone, Windows reports that the device is functioning properly. But it is not (necessarily). I have had the 4 upper ports in the back work with a pen drive (light shines and the pen drive is read/writable) at times. Right now, both Via controllers show as functioning properly but they do not work at all - not with PenDrive, mouse, or keyboard. They will light my desk lamp though.

Other outstanding problems with the DG45ID...... 1) I cannot allow the machine to sleep. After the machine sleeps, I hit `esc´ to bring it back to life but only the computer responds - the video never returns. A hard shutdown (power off) is required. 2) Heat is still an issue but I have a new CPU cooler coming soon. 3) Memory - I have 4 memory sticks. I have gotten 2 memory slots to work (Channel A, DIMM 0 and Channel B, DIMM 0) but have never been able to use my other 2 memory sticks (in Channel A. DIMM 1 and Channel B, DIMM 1). All 4 memory sticks have worked at one time or another in the DIMM 0 slots so the issue is not bad memory sticks. I ran MEMTEST86+ against each of them.

If I was in the USA, I probably would have dumped this board long ago. But here in Brasil, it is a logistical challenge to buy new parts, let alone do a warranty exchange. I could buy a new board for about USD$250 - 2 1/2 times its value - but I am too thrifty for that (retired, no income!)
