Nic, you seem to be the go to man with these problems. I have a Toshiba Satellite L655-S5150 64-bit Windows 7. While playing The Sims 3, my screen goes black and flashes. If I minimize the game then I just get the message about the driver crashing. If I do not minimize the game then it just freezes. This only started happening a few days ago and I have no clue why. I have not included any software recently. My dxdiag is as follows:

Hi all,

Wonder if anyone can shed any light on a situation I am having.

I have just purchased parts to build a new system for my girlfriend.

Specs:

Mainboard: Intel DH61AG mini-ITX

CPU: Intel Core i3 3220 3.30GHz Ivy Bridge

Memory: 4GB Corsair 1333MHz

SSD: SanDisk 64GB SDSSDP-064G-G25 SATA3

The build went well until trying to install Windows.

When selecting the drive to install windows to it comes up with the following:

Disk 0 Unallocated Space 0.0MB 0.0MB

Below is a warning link that says "Windows cannot be installed to this disk" which reads "The selected partition requires at least 5884MB free space" when you click on it. I've tried running diskpart to clean the drive which displayed:

"DiskPart has encountered an error: The request could not be performed because of an I/O error. See the System Event Log for more information."

I look into the SEL and there is no mention of this occurrance. I tried to create partition primary which resulted in:

"Virtual Disk Service error: There is not enough usable space for this operation"

I looked in the SATA devices in the BIOS and this was displayed:

SATA Port 0 Sandisk Milpit(0.0GB-3.0Gb/s)

I thought I may have a factory fault in the SSD until I installed the SSD into my own system and to my frustration, it worked.

I unplugged all other drives and successfully partitioned and formatted the SSD before installing Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit

I then plugged it back into the other system...same errors being displayed.

The only thing I can think of is that the SATA drivers are not compatible with these SSDs?

I had the BIOS updated before being shipped to me as I am running a 3rd generation i3 processor and by factory this board would not have been able to support a 3rd gen CPU (BIOS needs to be 0036 or higher) so the supplier flashed the BIOS to the most recent release (0105).

I have since re-flashed the BIOS back to 0104 and the same errors occur. The BIOS won't flash back any further (tried 0099 to no avail).

I have also updated the firmware that controls the AHCI controllers and this has had no effect either.

I have done pretty much all I can do and all I can assume is that the controllers onboard the DH61AG are not compatible with this model of SSD?

Any thoughts?

Thank you for your thoughtful reply. Part of the problem, I discovered, was due to many services and apps that the OS starts automatically at boot time. I have that managed now and that did make a big difference. I also, per your suggestion, re-enabled SpeedStep. This brought to light something I had not realized I didn't understand -- the SpeedStep feature. It seems that by disabling the SpeedStep feature in the BIOS, one forces the CPU to run at the lowest speed. I thought it would be the opposite and the CPU would run at the highest frequency all the time. My understanding was that SpeedStep would cut *back* the frequency if not needed rather than the other way around (which now that I think about it, makes more sense since the point is to ultimately conserve power and heat by running slower until needed).

But what really has me thinking has more to do with the support stance of my vendor and how to work with them. I did check with the vendor and they told me they won't accept the reports of any tool they did not create (or at least officially support). The disappointing situation here is the only tool they do support does not actually report back values that can be saved/referenced. They are simply pass/fail tests powered by PC-Doctor and my processor passes all of those as they are simply register, cache, SSE, prime number and floating point tests.

So on the one hand, the CPU is likely the component that is least likely to fail in a laptop. On the other hand, if the vendor cannot help me verify, what are my options? Should I accept the results of the vendor's tests without question? How does one insist on testing something the vendor is not prepared to test? Or am I simply not understanding the purpose of the testing? I admit I was focusing on the frequencies, but especially with SpeedStep, that seems to be dependent on what the CPU is being asked to do so this is probably not something to focus on.

Just for curiosity, I re-ran some tests with the tools I downloaded after I managed the automated services that were starting. I realized the PIDU tool I referenced above had not been consistent earlier -- reporting frequencies of .33GHz, 1.19GHz, and 2.26GHz -- but is now consistently reporting 2.26 GHz. When using other tools like CPU-Z, I was getting reports which although they fluctuated between just < 2000 MHz and just >3000 MHz, they remained consistently in that range. For example, see the output of one of the recent CPU-Z reports and compare it to another. They both clearly show the frequency @ > 3000 MHz. What I'm wondering is with SpeedStep doing its job of dynamically fluctuating between frequencies, how can one actually tell if there is something functioning questionably?

The side concern I have in all this is I have been wondering about excessive heat. Although the laptop sits on a cooling mat with two fans running whenever the laptop is powered on, I still suspect heat might be affecting the performance. I have not modified the hardware for overclocking so everything is running essentially as it came from the vendor (except I added RAM). I will contact the vendor for their cooling recommendations. The laptop design essentially intakes air from the bottom and outputs it to the rear of the chassis. Do you have any suggestions on how to facilitate cooling other than, say, lowering the air temperature of the entire room (which is an option in my small office lab if I use a floor standing unit)?

I am satisfied owner of a DH61AG mainboard.

I wanted to upgrade the BIOS, but something went terribly wrong.

My BIOS version was 0037. Upgrade to 0039 went well. Upgrade to 0099 also went well, but the next boot left me with just the POST screen.

I didn't think much of it (my mistake), powered off and went on to upgrade to 0105. This upgrade gave the error 1560 - an error regarding the Intel Management Engine Firmware.

I powered off again to try a do a recovery with the 0099 .BIO file on an USB stick, and all of sudden, the next boot gave me 3 beeps, indicating a memory error.

It's like it came out of nowhere.

Since then, I have not been able to power on the PC without the 3 beeps.

What I've tried since:

- The same memory (it's a 1x4gb Corsair stick, 1333Mhz, PC10600 DDR3) in the other memory slot

- A different memory stick (1x4gb Kingston, 1333Mhz) in both slots

- No memory at all to see if it made any difference

The only thing that gave a different result was to remove the battery for several hours and then attaching again. This actually makes the PC power on normally just for a brief moment before powering down by itself. It then powers on with the 3 beeps again.

What does this indicate?

Is there a real memory problem? Or is the new BIOS - albeit corrupt - trying to impose some timings to the RAM that isn't working? I haven't tweaked with the memory timings at all (it's serving as a home theater PC - no need to…)

Is the mainboard faulty? Do I need to hand it in for repair? Anyone with ideas?
