Today, I’m participating in Facebook’s Open Compute Project that showcases Facebook’s latest advancements to drive data center efficiency and make their innovative specifications open to the industry. The announcement is an impressive accomplishment for Facebook, and we’re excited to be part of it.
Our collaboration represents more than 18 months of engineers from both companies working together to optimize performance per watt and develop a highly efficient board design. The results? A 60% reduction in power consumption per user based on the leading energy-efficient performance of Intel Xeon Processor-based platforms, jointly developed system optimization, and Facebook's aggressive power optimization.
These world class results reflect our shared mission for utilization of industry standards and open infrastructure to advance data center efficiency with a goal of more data centers achieving PUE of 1.2 or lower. While Facebook will benefit directly from the efficiency of their new data center, they aren’t the only winners here. The collaborative effort pushed Intel to deliver technology for greater efficiency, which will ultimately benefit a broad base of data centers across the globe.
Facebook’s decision to openly share their data center design will also provide inspiration for other IT leaders facing similar technical challenges.
